The giant barrel sponge is one of the largest species of sponges found in the Caribbean. The giant barrel sponges is often referred to as the redwood of the sea because it can live up to 2,000 years and also because of its giant size and sometimes reddish color. The giant barrel sponges is a filter feeder so it gets obtains its food by having water constantly pushed through it, and its small pores in the body wall are lined with flagella, the rhythmic motion of the flagella pulls water through the channels.
Sometimes these large sponges are even used as homes for other sea creatures like eels and the Caribbean spiny lobster.
